"House & Garden was inspired by our love of natural life, of our gardens and the central place they play in our home-lives, our friendships and relationships. Jim and I were working one day, it was a beautiful spring day, and Jim said he’d started a song while thinking about the strawberry plants he has in his garden. His mother gave him the cuttings planted by his father, and though he passed on many years ago, his memory is kept alive in the garden. What a beautiful gift to reflect on your loved ones as you tend your flowers! We wrote the rest of the lyrics with specific flowers in mind and what they represent (love, faith, comfort). One of the songs on the album, "April Fool," is entirely about the columbine, which has a wonderful mythology. It is the official flower of April 1 and has been used for healing, among other things. “My Soul” is based on a 1919 poem written by Nell’s great-grandfather, written after his return from WWI, longing for the beauty and fragrance of a divine garden. Our ideas grew to encompass themes of home and love. Along with our original body of work here we included a soulful rendition of country music pioneer George Jones’ “Old Old House,” about the emptiness of a house without love. We felt the album should be simple with spare instrumentation and a focus on stories, lyrics and vocal harmonies. The sound is refreshingly rich, with sweet surprises as the guitar and voices take on the sound of bees, mayflies, a music box, and even cello strings. (Nell Robinson) Nell Robinson is a songwriter and vocalist, and has performed on A Prairie Home Companion, at The Kate Wolf Folk Festival and the Hardly Strictly Bluegrass Festival. Her debut albums, Loango and On the Brooklyn Road, charted nationally in both bluegrass and Americana. Jim Nunally is an award-winning songwriter and guitarist, and a recipient of two Grammy Award certifications. He has performed in most every major bluegrass festival in the country. Recently, Nell and Jim were featured at the Kennedy Center for Performing Arts with a special show, Soldier Stories. They will perform their House & Garden songs on a PBS music series to be released in 2013. Nell & Jim will also be performing in a feature movie about the life of Bill Monroe, Blue Moon of Kentucky." |
